Are you a Lifelong Learner?

I recently heard on the radio about a woman who used her commute as the basis for starting a Master’s degree.  Separate recent studies by the TUC and recruitment firm Randstad show a significant rise in the time and distance people commute. How can you turn this to your advantage?

First, consider why you want to learn?  A pure love of learning? Build skills or knowledge for a current role?  As a springboard for future roles? A bit of kudos or cache?  Whatever your motivation start to map out your learning pathways.

Then consider your learning style:  Are you a visual, auditory or kinesthetic learner?  Know your preference – there are a number of free learning styles questionnaires out there you can take, some of which are free.

Lastly, make the most of technology.  You can access learning in so many ways including podcasts, videos, online courses and webinars.  These are all great opportunities to sample courses, get back into the “learning groove” and take short, intense bursts of continuous professional development.  Traditional methods apply too, in terms of reading a book or sketching something – room permitting – on the bus or train.

Whatever options you take you can not afford to wait around for your company to offer you your next learning and development opportunity.  Go out and get learning!
