Do you have a ‘lucky’ mindset?

A few years ago when I was getting started in career coaching, I took a part-time job in an HR department in an NHS Trust on the edge of London.  I was really keen to be out there coaching and the part-time job seemed to be a barrier to this. Yes, I was grateful because it was giving much-needed money to feed and clothe myself, it was just that it wasn’t coaching.

My seat was right next to the fax machine – yes I did say it was a while ago.  A fax machine that usually spewed out a fair amount of junk that meant most of the people in the office only checked it if they were expecting something.  Anyway, I happened to be passing when I saw a fax headed “Executive Coaching Service Available”.  I don’t remember what the rest of the fax said.  What I do remember is saying “I can do that”.  The next thing you know I was calling the number at the bottom and presenting myself as a suitable coach – the fax did not say they were looking for people.

To cut a long story down a little, I found myself being interviewed in Bristol – I’d been so excited I did not note where the office of the company was until my impromptu phone interview – and, ultimately, landing my first piece of associate coaching work – which over the years has been a very useful source of learning and earnings.

What’s the point of all this?  Simply this, a “lucky” mindset – one that combines a clear understanding of what you want, why you want it and a willingness to explore the means to achieve this – can tune you into opportunities that you and others might otherwise miss.

So, in the words of Dirty Harry, “Do you feel lucky punk?”

Take the opportunity this week to be lucky.
